How to Record GTA 6 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S (Beginner Setup)

Updated October 4, 2026 · 6 min read

To record GTA 6 on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, you do not need extra gear to start. Both consoles have built-in capture: press the Create button on a PS5 controller or the Share button on an Xbox controller, save or start a recording, then move the file to your phone or computer to edit. Record your voice separately on your phone. Add a capture card only if your tests show you need longer recordings or want to stream through a computer. GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, so set this up and test it now with a game you already own.

Recording on PS5

  1. Press the Create button (the small button to the left of the touchpad). The capture menu opens.
  2. Save what you just played or start a new recording. Use "save recent gameplay" for something that already happened, and a new recording when you plan a session.
  3. Find your files in the console's media gallery, where screenshots and recordings collect.
  4. Check the capture settings in the system settings before you record anything important: the recording quality options, whether your microphone and party chat are included, and where captures are saved.

Recording on Xbox Series X|S

  1. Press the Share button (the button in the middle of the controller). Depending on your settings, a press or a hold captures a screenshot or saves a clip of recent play.
  2. Open the capture options from the Xbox guide to start a recording or see your recent captures.
  3. Check the capture settings in the system settings: what the Share button does, the clip and quality options, and whether captures go to internal storage or an external drive.

Getting the files to your phone or computer

  • USB drive: copy captures from the media gallery or captures section to a drive, then plug it into a laptop. This is the dependable route for long recordings.
  • Companion app: each console has a companion app that can bring captures to your phone. It is built with short clips in mind, so check that a long recording really arrives and in what quality.
  • Leave room: captures fill storage fast. Clear space before a session and delete what you have already copied.

Record your voice separately

Record your commentary after you play, with your phone's voice recorder or a headset microphone, while you watch your cut. You can redo a line, and the game audio stays clean for editing. A small room with soft things in it, like a closet full of clothes, sounds better than an empty kitchen.

One more audio habit: when you get the game, look in its audio settings for a way to lower or turn off radio music before you record. Licensed songs can trigger copyright claims on YouTube.

When a capture card is worth it

A capture card sits between the console and your TV and sends the picture to a computer, where software like OBS records it. It costs money and needs a computer, so buy one only for a reason:

  • Your test shows the console stops recording before your sessions end.
  • You want to stream through a computer, with your own overlays and microphone setup.
  • Moving files off the console is slowing you down every day.

The 30-minute test (do it this week)

  1. Record 30 minutes of any game you own without stopping.
  2. Check whether the recording ran the full 30 minutes. If it stopped early, write down when.
  3. Move the file to the phone or laptop you will edit on, and time how long that takes.
  4. Open it in your editor, record a few voice lines on your phone and line them up.
  5. Export one minute and watch it on a phone. Is the picture clear? Can you hear yourself over the game?

Every problem this test finds is one you will not be solving on November 19, when everyone else is learning where their files went. Run it again after any system update.

Free editors that are enough to start

  • CapCut: quick to learn, on phone and computer. Good for Shorts and simple long videos.
  • DaVinci Resolve: a free desktop editor with more control over audio and color. Slower to learn, worth it if you edit on a computer.
  • OBS: free recording and streaming software for a computer. You need it only if you use a capture card.

If you want the whole path in order, LaunchPlay's six-step guide goes further: picking a role that fits your equipment, the full console capture lesson, packaging titles and thumbnails, and a day-by-day plan for launch week. It is an unofficial guide for beginner creators, a one-time US$19.90, and it does not promise income.

Questions

Can you record GTA 6 on PS5 without a capture card?

Yes. The PS5 has built-in capture through the Create button on the controller. Run a 30-minute test recording with a game you own to learn how long your console records with your settings.

How do I get recordings off my Xbox or PS5?

Copy them to a USB drive and plug it into a computer, or use the console's companion app to bring them to your phone. The USB route is the dependable one for long recordings.

Why does my capture card show a black screen on PS5?

HDCP is probably on. The PlayStation Blog has confirmed you need to turn HDCP off in the PS5 system settings to use a capture card.

What is the best free editor for GTA 6 videos?

CapCut is the easiest start on a phone or computer. DaVinci Resolve gives more control on a computer. OBS is for recording and streaming through a capture card, not for editing.

Should I record my voice while playing or after?

After is easier for most beginners: you can redo lines and keep the game audio clean. If you want live reactions, record your phone during the session and clap once at the start to sync the two files.
